What elements should my paper have?

Here is a checklist for your paper. Not all papers will require the same elements and structure.

Format

Essential bits that should always be there:

Contact details (e.g. e-mail)

Introduction

Main body of the text, chapters

Conclusion

Correctly formatted references (a URL is NOT enough)

Page numbers

You may also want to include:

Table of contents (for longer papers, ca. +15pp)

Recommendations (for policy reports), can be part of conclusions

Executive summary (for policy reports)

bullet

List of figures and/or tables (if applicable)

bullet

Cover letter (transfer of a policy report to a client)

Short, clear sentences

bullet

Active tense, rather than passive

bullet

Clear structure of sections and paragraphs, e.g. Problem-evidence-conclusion

Neutral language

bullet

Sources are solid (scientific publications)

bullet

All quotations have quotation marks and sources, no (accidental) plagiarism
